Chapter 15
Letting Eddie Costner hit the road was a difficult thing to watch. Sure, what I had on him (a low level intent to distribute charge) wasn’t much, but it would have been enough to keep him for long enough to try to milk him for information. I trusted Boomer, though. I knew that what he was telling me was the truth, and because of that, I needed to be careful.
If the mayor was involved in this, it meant Eddie wasn’t just some drug pusher. It meant he was connected to the local government in some way that made me horribly uncomfortable. It also meant that the eyes inside of our own police department, a department I now ran, couldn’t be trusted. I understood why Boomer didn’t want me involved in this, but I was involved now, and I was going to have to see it through.
“Are you sure this is the right move?” Boomer asked, looking over at me from the passenger seat of my car. “I’ve been on this guy for months now. He’s slippery.”
After letting Eddie go, the plan was to keep an eye on him. Boomer hadn’t had much luck ith pinning down where the man lived or what his days looked like. In fact, before he surfaced hanging around Rocco’s a little while ago, my friend thought he had lost him.
I had a plan, though. There were enough of us not to have to worry about losing sight of the man. With Boomer and I in one car, Rick in another, and Wes and Andrew following in a third, we were bound to keep at least one set of eyes on the man. What was more, we had an ‘in’. Eddie Costner knew Wes as a potential client. He was a buyer, and we could use that to our advantage.
Luckily for us, Eddie seemed to be a consummate businessman. No sooner was he out of jail that he hit Wes’ phone up with a text telling him to meet him at a specific spot in town in a couple of hours, and saying he had some business to attend to first.
While Wes and Andrew were about to branch off and go wait at the agreed upon destination, Boomer and I couldn’t take the chance that Eddie was trying to throw us off his trail. There was a decent chance that he knew what was going on. Boomer said he had already brought the man in for questioning once. So, it would make sense that Eddie knew he was looking at him pretty hard. Throw another arrest onto the pile, and it might be hard for Eddie not to put the pieces together.
To that end, Boomer and I followed while Wes and Andrew went to the location and Rick staked out Eddie’s last known address. We needed to keep our bases covered, because if Eddie really did know about us, he was going to be making a break for it, and I couldn’t have that, not after everything I’d seen.
